Compliance with the Conflict of Interest Act is a condition of an individual's appointment or employment as a public office holder (section 19).

Read the Act

The Act's core conflict of interest and post-employment rules apply to all public office holders. They include the following categories of public office holders:

Public office holders, who are subject only to the Act’s general rules. Please click on the following link to consult a Summary of Rules for Public Office Holders.
Reporting public office holders, who are also subject to the Act’s reporting and public disclosure provisions, and its prohibitions against engaging in outside activities and holding controlled assets. While prevention is the major focus of the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, the Commissioner also applies the enforcement provisions of the Act as necessary. There are several means of enforcing the Act. The Commissioner can impose administrative monetary penalties and issue compliance orders. The Commissioner can also launch formal investigations of possible contraventions of the Act. Such investigations typically result in a report to the Prime Minister that is also made public.
