Fundraising: Rules for public office holders

When engaging in fundraising, whether for charitable, political or other purposes, public office holders must be mindful of their obligations under the Conflict of Interest Act.

The Act contains one provision that explicitly addresses fundraising. Section 16 prohibits public office holders from personally soliciting funds from any person or organization if doing so would place them in a conflict of interest. The application of this rule is explained in an information notice issued by the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner.
