In cases where public office holders are not meeting their obligations under the Conflict of Interest Act, the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner can issue compliance orders to ensure they do so in the future.
Under section 30 of the Act, the Commissioner may order a public office holder to take any compliance measure that he determines is necessary to comply with the Act. The Commissioner could, for example, order a public office holder to submit documents for the required annual review of the information contained in their confidential report, to cease prohibited outside activities, to divest controlled assets, or to refrain from seeking to influence a decision.
No compliance orders may be issued under the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons.
